Competition between heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation in a charged colloidal silica suspension

چکیده
Throughout the past few years the problem of solidification of a melt via nucleation has been addressed in colloidal systems mainly suspended in a fluid, which are known to undergo crystallization and have received considerably interest outside the colloid community. Despite the great deal of work, the microscopic details of the crystallization process are still not completely understood. A very little is known about the influence of impurities or substrates on the kinetics of crystallization from the melt. Here as recently has been shown for homogeneous nucleation, colloidal systems can also help to get a deeper insight into the heterogeneous nucleation processes. We here present extended time resolved 2dimensional USAXS study of the solidification process in a flat cell.

Surface tension and nucleation rate of phases of a charged colloidal suspension.
The square gradient approximation is used to calculate the surface tension between two phases of differing density in a charged colloidal suspension, and the results are compared with experimental and theoretical evidence from various colloidal systems. The nucleation rate of a colloidal liquid cluster from a metastable colloidal gas is estimated using a version of classical nucleation theory. ...

A suspension of charged colloidal silica spheres exhibiting a bi-modal size distribution of particles, thereby mimicking a binary mixture, was studied using time-resolved ultra-small-angle synchrotron X-ray scattering (USAXS). The sample, consisting of particles of diameters d(A) = (104.7 ± 9.0) nm and d(B) = (88.1 ± 7.8) nm (d(A)/d(B) ≈ 1.2), and with an estimated composition A(0.6(1))B(0.4(1)...
متن کاملNucleation: theory and applications to protein solutions and colloidal suspensions
The status of our understanding of nucleation is reviewed. Both general aspects of nucleation and those specific to protein solutions and colloidal suspensions are considered. We conclude that although we have what we believe is a quite good understanding of homogeneous nucleation in one simple system, hard-sphere colloids, in other systems there are still basic questions that are unanswered. F...

Industrial demands for more compact heat exchangers are a motivation to find new technology features. Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) is introduced as a promising phenomenon for heat transfer enhancement mechanisms. Similar to any new technology, EHD has not been understood completely yet and requires more fundamental studies. In boiling phase change phenomena, nucleation is the dominant mechanism i...
